How Drugs Like Ozempic and Wegovy Cause Gastroparesis

What Is Gastroparesis or Stomach Paralysis?

Gastroparesis is diagnosed when the stomach muscles that push food through the intestinal tract stop working normally. When food doesn’t empty out of the stomach and into the intestines, it can harden and even cause dangerous blockages.

Gastroparesis can also cause severe and chronic nausea and vomiting, which can lead to malnutrition and dehydration. The cascading effect can eventually cause organ failure if left untreated.

The range of gastroparesis symptoms includes:

  • Chronic nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal bloating and pain
  • Intestinal blockages
  • Malnutrition
  • Organ failure
  • Serious hospitalization

How Ozempic, Wegovy, and GLP-1 Drugs Can Cause Gastroparesis

The intended purpose of drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, Trulicity, Mounjaro, and Reybelsus is to regulate blood sugar levels and slow down how fast the stomach empties after you eat so you feel fuller longer.

Research published in the Jounal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found an increased risk of gastroparesis when using GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy.

More and more medical studies are linking GLP-1 medications with serious intestinal problems like stomach paralysis. This happens when the GLP-1 drugs cause nerve and muscle damage to the stomach muscles, which stops food from moving through the gastrointestinal system. It’s also called stomach paralysis.

Who Is at Risk for Gastroparesis?

People taking Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Trulicity and Reybelsus may be at higher risk of developing gastroparesis. Risk factors include:

  • People with diabetes, especially those with poor blood sugar control, are more prone to gastroparesis due to potential nerve damage affecting the stomach.
  • People taking GLP-1 medications at higher doses or for long periods of time may be at increased risk of gastroparesis.

Gastroparesis Lawsuits Involving Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Trulicity and Reybelsus

If you developed gastroparesis after taking a GLP-1 drug, such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Trulicity and Rybelsus, you may qualify to file a lawsuit for compensation. You can learn more about each of these litigations here:

Pharmaceutical companies have a responsibility to make sure their products are safe and to warn consumers of potential side effects. When they fail to do so, they can be held accountable.

Is there a Gastroparesis Class Action Lawsuit?

The federal court has set up a single “Multidistrict Litigation,” or MDL 3094: Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists (GLP-1 RAS) Products Liability Litigation, where the court will hear claims regarding injuries caused by Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Trulicity and Reybelsus.

An MDL is a process that is similar to a class action, because it combines many similar cases under the supervision of a single judge.  This helps these cases move through the pre-trial phases more efficiently, as thousands of people are seeking the same information from the defendants.

Once that information is gathered for everyone, the cases can then be worked up for individual trials.

Typically, courts pick a few example cases to hold trials over, first.  These are called “bellwether trials.”  The court’s goal is that these few trials can result in a settlement program without having to hold trials for each of the thousands of cases that are filed.
