Child with ITP Receives $105,000 Vaccine Injury Award After MMR Shot

A young boy and his family recently received a $105,000 award after his immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) worsened following an MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine. Thanks to the support of vaccine injury attorney Diana Stadelnikas and the team at mctlaw, the child and his family were able to get meaningful compensation for what they went.

The child was first diagnosed with ITP as a baby. Thankfully, his condition remained under control for many years. That changed after he received another dose of the MMR vaccine.

About two weeks after the vaccination, his parents noticed signs of ITP, including unusual bruising and small red or purple spots on his skin. His platelet levels dropped dangerously low. Doctors began treatment right away, but the first round of care was not enough. They had to move to more intensive therapies before he finally began to stabilize.

“This case was unique and legally important,” said mctlaw vaccine injury attorney Diana Stadelnikas. “Even though our client had a prior history of ITP, we were able to prove that the MMR vaccine significantly aggravated his condition and caused a relapse of his ITP.”

The family filed a claim through the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP), a federal program created by Congress in 1986 to help people who experience rare but serious vaccine-related injuries. The program awarded $105,000 in compensation for the child’s pain and suffering.  In the NVCIP, minor child awards can be distributed through a guardianship  account or parents/guardians can choose to invest the award until the age of majority, at which point the invested amount plus growth, is distributed to the child.

This case shows that even if a medical condition existed before vaccination, a sudden and serious worsening of a disorder may still qualify as a vaccine injury. The legal team at mctlaw has experience handling these complex cases and is ready to help families understand their options.
